Videos&lt;/span&gt;&lt;/a&gt;&lt;/p&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;span style="font-family:arial;"&gt;During 2003, California PATH completed a three-year program of research, development and demonstration on the application of a variety of Intelligent Transportation System (ITS) technologies to enhance the effectiveness of Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) operations. This program included testing of three transit buses operating under automatic control at highway speed on an High Occupancy Vehicle (HOV) facility, as well as precision docking at two different types of bus stops. Visitors from the ITS and transit communities had the opportunity to observe the testing in August 2003, in conjunction with a national workshop on automated BRT and other transit innovations. By riding in the experimental vehicles, they were able to directly experience some of the benefits of the use of the technologies, which enabled them to better understand how rapidly the technologies are advancing and becoming available for public deployment in the near term. Research that includes full-scale demonstrations such as this is needed in order to convince the customers for the ITS technologies that they are indeed feasible, beneficial, and attractive to the public.
